Years of arguments and lawsuits surrounding the controversial .XXX domain haven’t paid off, as it’s finally made available to the general public today.
The ICANN approved domain extension has already been applied for over 100,000 times during the Sunrise and Landrush periods of its registration process.
ICM Registry is predicting that the number of registrations will double in the coming weeks now that the domain is on general sale, that is, it is no longer limited to registrations from the pornography/adult entertainment industry.
The protect XXX addresses from spam, sites will be scanned on a daily basis using malware scanning software from MacAfee. ICM also says that the sites will be much easier to moderate than traditional pornography sites as all XXX pages will be tagged with safety labels, making then more detectable and therefore more block-able, from browsers. Around 250 million pages have already been labelled.
Registering a .XXX domain will cost roughly $100 a year depending on the name, however, each domain registrar will offer different renewal packages.

Every month, we take those profile views, compile a list of the Top 25 Most Popular Domains Companies and publish them on the site for all of our visitors to see. We also include a neat little fact next to the companies’ names that lets everyone know how many times they’ve been in our Top 25.

Top level adult domain goes public on December 6
Easyspace, one of the UK’s largest web hosting companies, is urging customers to ‘get in quick’ if they want to secure the .XXX top level domain before it goes on general sale a week from today.
The General Availability phase for the new adult top level domain starts on December 6 2011. The .XXX TLD will be allocated to applicants on a first-come first-serve basis.
Sarah Haran, managing director of Easyspace, said: “This is the last but probably the busiest phase of the .XXX launch where the remaining .XXX domain names can be purchased instantly, so I’d urge people to pre-register in the next seven days if they haven’t already done so. Once the registry confirms it, you will be the legal owner of the domain you’ve requested so if you don’t get in quick you could end up disappointed.”
The General Availability phase also allows all members of the adult sponsored community to apply without pre-existing rights or qualifications unlike in the previous launch periods, however they will be subject to a verification process. Non-members of the adult sponsored community will be able to apply for ‘non-resolving’ .XXX domain names.
General Availability .XXX TLDs are available from Easyspace from £79.99 (includes £20 processing fee).
Easyspace is a subsidiary of iomart Group plc which was named Scottish Digital IT Company of the Year 2011 and is ranked as one of the top 25 cloud services providers in the world by Talkin’ Cloud 50.

Since its proposal in 2000, the XXX domain has been surrounded by controversy with organisations from schools to internet companies deeming the domain unnecessary and tasteless.
Now it seems that even the porn industry, the very people at which the domain is aimed, is taking a stance against ICANN’s decision to offer out the .XXX TLD.
According to PCWorld New Zealand two pornography networks are looking to sue ICANN and ICM, claiming they are both guilty of antitrust violations.
Digital Playground and Manwin (YouPorn and Playboy website manager) are suggesting that the introduction of the XXX domain is forcing industries to register expensive domains in order to defend their brands.
The companies are calling it 'defensive registration', with Manwin saying “It uncovers a pernicious monopoly at the very heart of the Internet.”
Fabian Thylmann, Managing Partner of Luxembourg-based Manwin, also added “Ending anticompetitive practices by ICM and ICANN will not only protect our business, but help other companies compelled to pay a fee to keep their names unassociated with an .XXX designation."
There has been no official statement from ICANN or ICM regarding the lawsuit.

Earlier this year ICANN announced that it would be offering branded domains, such as .Sony and .Hitachi, so that high profile companies can protect their brand names online.
The initial interest in the domains has been positive, with IBM, Canon, and Unicef already agreeing to pay the steep $185,000 registration fee to secure their URL.
Seeing how much money could potentially be made from the high costs, London based domains registrar CentralNic, is marketing the domains at a slightly different angle. Although the principle behind the branded domains will remain the same, CentralNic is offering wealthy families with famous and prestigious names to register them as the ultimate vanity URL.
This means that names like .Hilton, .Branson and even names like .Depp and .Travolta could potentially become their own top level domain (TLD) if anyone is willing to pay the price.
CentralNic CEO Ben Crawford explains the reasoning behind the idea: "In the UK, some people spend more money than this getting a licence plate for their car […] Not many people, granted, but for a certain group of people their name is very important to them."
However, if you happen to be an ordinary guy called Travolta and don’t want your family name registered by the rich and famous, you’ll be given the chance to appeal a registration should it be made.
ICANN will offer a period of object after a domain is registered for those that want to prevent it happening. Though it wont guarantee that a certain domain name wont be registered, ICANN will take into account all of the comments and arguments made while its deciding whether or not to approve an application.

Despite the longstanding rivalry between Samsung and Apple, Samsung (along with Google) has announced that it will be postponing the release of the Nexus Prime smartphone as a sign of respect to the late Steve Jobs.
The new device was supposed to be revealed tomorrow (October 11th) at the CTIA event in San Francisco but has been postponed to an undisclosed date.
The official statement says:
“Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”
The Nexus Prime will be the first device to utilise Google’s new Ice Cream Sandwich Android operating system so the postponement comes as a disappointment to some. However, Eric Schmidt promised the release of Ice Cream Sandwich before the end of November so it looks likely that it will only be a matter of weeks until the announcement takes place.
