What are Domain Registrations?

Registering a domain name is one of the first steps that must be taken when developing a website. A domain must be purchased through a registrar and is generally an inexpensive process. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) run the Domain Name Server (DNS) database. When you are trying to register a domain name it will be checked against this database to ensure it is available. ICANN recommends dealing with an accredited registrar who will have entered into an official agreement with ICANN to meet minimal requirements for providing domain registration.

A domain will be purchased for a set period of time which is usually a year, although contracts can vary depending on the provider. For example some registrars may offer a discounted rate but tie you into a two year contract. You will receive the discount in the first year but have to pay the full price for the second year.

During the registration process you will be required to enter your details into the WHOIS database. This is a publicly available database where people can search for the details of the domain owner and where the domain is hosted. These details can be restricted upon request to the WHOIS database.
